With this in mind, he has incorporated 3-D imaging as a diagnostic tool in treatment planning for some patients. 3-D imaging is a very new method of obtaining x-rays. It is produced from a digital x-ray machine that instantly transfers the patient's image to a computer, as opposed to developing 2-D film. This is very convenient for the patient, as the scan only takes ten seconds while he/she is seated comfortably. It also produces a clearer image and creates a much broader spectrum of the anatomy.
Once in the computer, Dr. Sugiyama has the freedom to view the patient in a three dimensional form. The software allows him to see the relationships between bones, teeth, airways, nerves and tissues in order to plan or evaluate a treatment plan. He can rotate, sculpt, zoom, add color and take measurements. This can be an especially important aid when it comes to certain problematic cases or in a plan that involves surgery.
Types of cases that may require a 3-D imaging scan include TMJ disorders, impacted teeth, enlarged tonsils or sinus problems, missing teeth requiring implants and certain surgical cases. It can be helpful for those who have such conditions to be able to view their own anatomy for themselves while at Dr. Sugiyama's office. This type of 3-D imaging produces the same kind of high-quality images as a CT (CAT) scan, but does so with less radiation. Having this "virtual patient" not only helps him assess a better diagnosis and treatment plan, but can be used as a reference and communication tool between his dental colleagues.
